Vacation to Charlottesville. Visit Monticello this spring!
Thursday, 13 May 2010 06:05

Planning a visit to Charlottesville?  Then a visit to Monticello is definitely on your list.

Here are a few tips for your visit.  And to get you excited check out this quick video below.

For the best experience, buy your tickets online!

Monticello uses timed ticketing to expedite the house tour process. Make house tour reservations in advance to ensure your preferred tour time and avoid (sometimes lengthy) waits for the next available House Tour.  There are other tours - Family Friendly Tours and the  evening Signature Tours.  Click here for more information.

Groups of 25 or more may schedule a tour by calling Group Reservations at (434) 984 - 9880.

Plan your visit to experience Monticello at its best.

June - September are particularly nice; the gardens are in bloom and visitors can take advantage of two additional guided tours included in the price of general admission - the Gardens and Grounds Tour and the Plantation Community Tour. It is generally best to visit in the morning (before 11) and late afternoon (after 3). Weekends are the busiest days.

Visiting with Kids

Children are welcome on house tours. Small strollers are permitted in the house. Monticello also offers special, interactive House Family Friendly Tours and other hands-on activities specifically for young visitors.

Touring the house requires at least 1 hour, and there is a lot more to see and do.

House tours last 30 minutes, and you should allow 15 minutes for the shuttle bus rides to and from the house. The price of admission includes two guided 45 minute walking tours - the Gardens and Grounds and Plantation Community Tours - available April - October. Other special activities occur on the mountain year-round.  You may also shop for Jeffersonian gifts and plants in the Museum Shop, stop by the Café at Monticello for a snack, or hike the Thomas Jefferson Parkway.

May Sweeps: TV Time with Kerri
Wednesday, 12 May 2010 00:00

tvBy Kerri Cushna

Ah, May Sweeps. One of my favorite times of the television season, when the networks throw together their ‘A' material, amp it up, add a few HUGE guest stars and broadcast the final product in an effort to improve their Nielsen Ratings.

May Sweeps starts April 29th and runs through May 26th and runs directly into Upfronts Week, where the Networks determine which shows are going to stay and which will go, based on their ratings. Usually, the Networks are into making their frontrunners flashy and bold to outdo the other networks, while throwing in season finales sprinkled with suspense

If you haven't seen it already, NBC really brought the house down with Betty White as the host of SNL on Saturday, May 8. I was a little surprised to see NBC bring out the big guns so early simply because the rest of their lineup is a little weak. The exception of this hurdle is Thursday night's new hit, Community. Community really started off things the right way, especially being a new show this season. Each episode has been better than the one before, and has already been renewed, so they don't have to worry about the chopping block just yet. The Office has been a bit lacking this season, but stay tuned to see what big things are in store.

NBC also has a few other things up their sleeve with Rob Lowe on Parks & Recreation. And expect a return from Scott Bakula on Chuck for the season finale.

FOX also started out strong with House and karaoke night, and kept the fun going with Olivia Newton-John and Molly Shannon on Glee. But hold on to your hats, because the one and only Neil Patrick Harris will have his own storyline, and was directed by none other than the brilliant Joss Whedon. And that's not the only thing FOX has to offer this Sweeps. It is rumored that Leonard Nimoy will soon retire from acting, so his role on Fringe may be the last. It seems like FOX is the heavy hitter this year, because Bones is looking at another return of ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons. I've always loved Bones, but Billy Gibbons makes an awesome episode even better. I haven't really been vibing with the CW since the WB/UPN debacle, but I hear the season finales are going to be amazing and full of drama with Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill and 90210. Also, look for the Smallville season finale.

CBS is looking good with Chuck Lorre (creator) powerhouses Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men. Big Bang started off sweeps with a big bang with their "separated parent" outlook on the relationships of the main characters. However, with each passing episode, a former favorite of mine, How I Met Your Mother, has just become laughably bad. And I love Neil Patrick Harris. And then there's ABC with the end of Lost. Which is going to be huge. Bigger than huge. And if you're a Lost fan, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

But what will I be watching this Sweeps? That's easy. All my favorites - Glee, House, Bones, Grey's Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, Community, Parenthood, Private Practice, and maybe Fringe.

And I'm more than looking forward to Upfronts week (May 16-22) to see who will go into the boardroom, who will get put on the chopping block, and who will be voted off the island.

What will YOU be watching this season?

Barboursville Vineyards and Historic Ruins

barboursville-vineyardA magnificent and historic Virginia estate between Monticello and Montpelier, home to Virginia's most honored winery, and my personal favorite winery when I visit Charlottesville!  They produce one of my favorite wines, Octagon, the most renowned red wine of Virginia.  I have four bottles and am eagerly awaiting a very special occasion to open a few!  I highly recommend a visit not only for their wonderful wines but to tour the estate.  Barboursville has a wonderful history and a beautiful location!

The present estate winery, vineyards and gift shop are located on 830 acres of beautiful rolling hills close to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Barboursville Vineyard presently has 126 acres of vineyards and continues to expand. Under the direction of Luca Paschina, General Manager and winemaker, Barboursville consistently produces quality wines that have won international recognition.

The Zonin family of Italy, brought their strong commitment to produce quality wines to Virginia in 1976. They were the first in the state to plant and successfully establish the revered vitis vinifera vines.

Wines - 21 including Chardonnay, Barbera, Malvaxia, Pinot Grigio, and Sparkling Brut.

Opening Times - Monday to Saturday 10 to 5 pm, Sunday 11 to 5pm.

Tasting Fees - $4.00 per person, includes glass and tasting of 16 to 20 wines (on your next visit, bring your glass and there is no charge for tasting).
