Grand Pirates Ball
Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:56

609Pillage and plunder your way through downtown Hampton on June 1-3 when the 13th annual Hampton Blackbeard Pirate Festival returns for another year of swashbuckling excitement!  Celebrate Hampton's rich maritime heritage by commemorating the demise of our most infamous visitor, Captain Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard the Pirate. During the later part of the 1600's and early 1700's, pirates roamed the coastal waters of Virginia and  North Carolina in search of ships laden with tobacco and other goods.  The marauders terrorized waterways and unsuspecting cargo ships, capturing goods, sailors and ships. Captain Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard the Pirate, was the most daunting of these menacing outlaws.

After years of wreaking havoc on Virginia's  shores and economy, Blackbeard's life was finally  taken in a violent sea battle with Lieutenant  Robert Maynard in 1718. His severed head was  impaled upon a pole near the mouth of Hampton Creek,  now known as Blackbeard's Point, to serve as an  unyielding reminder that piracy would  not be tolerated in Virginia. Beginning June 1, roughly 50,000 seafaring attendees, as well as Blackbeard and his crew, will once again  invade downtown Hampton during the  13th annual Blackbeard Pirate Festival! Interact with Blackbeard (personified by first-person  interpreter Ben Cherry) and more than 100 other  authentically costumed pirate re-enactors as they  run rampant on the streets of America's oldest continuous English-speaking settlement. The festivities kick off Friday night, June 1, 7:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. at the Oyster Alley restaurant on the back of the Crowne Plaza Hampton  Marina Hotel with the 13th annual Grand Pirates Ball  (creative black tie or period attire strictly enforced!).  The celebration, a recreation of Blackbeard's Party at Okracoke,  will feature Caribbean food, adult beverages, music by The Brigands, and more. Though the festival is free, there is an admission charge for the ball. Advance tickets can be purchased in the coming months at www.blackbeardfestival.com.

Pfac "Hands On For Kids" gallery new activities focus on artists and creativity
Friday, 13 April 2012 12:10

In recognition of The PeninsulaFine Arts Center's golden anniversary, the Hands on For Kids gallery reflects the theme of the newestexhibition: Who We Are Past and Present, whichcelebrates artists who have shaped Pfac during its 50-year history.

In the Hands on for Kidsgallery, children have the opportunity to engage with posters of famous worksof art and create stories inspired by the works. The children can also takeinspiration from the works and create a drawing that tells a story about"who they are."

Visitors to the Hands on for Kidsgallery can learn about the region by playing a map game. Children playing thegame will match images from around Newport News to their descriptions, find important landmarksand answer map questions using a large map of the Tidewater region. Afterexploring the area around them through the game, children can create their ownmap of where they live or even an imaginary place.

Building blocks available in the Handson for Kids gallery give children the chance to work on hand-eyecoordination and use their imagination to build what they think the art museumwill look like in the future. At the collage table children can look atself-portraits done by artists and then create their own self-portrait collageusing yarn, beans, cloth and more.

To reflect the theme of "who we are" children will alsohave the chance to create a life sized self-portrait on the giant chalkboard. After their outline has been traced children can add any features to theirchalk-selves to show who they are.

In addition to the creative expressions in the Hands on for Kids gallery, Pfac offersadditional opportunities for family fun in the FamilyActivity Center located in the lobby. Here, families will findactivities for parents and children to interact with one another and the art ondisplay in the galleries.

Access to the Hands on for Kids gallery and activities is free to Pfacmembers and included with Pfac admission to non-members.

The Peninsula Fine Arts Center is located at 101 Museum Drivewithin Mariners' Museum Park in Newport News, VA. For moreinformation, visit www.pfac-va.org orcall 757-596-8175.
