Winter Lecture Series: George Daughan- 1812: The Navy’s War for February 27th from 7-9pm at The Mariners’ Museum.

In celebration of the bicentennial of the War of 1812, George Daughan will join us at The Mariners’ Museum to discuss his latest book: 1812: The Navy’s War.  America was at odds against the great British Royal Navy, seeming that they would easily be defeated the United States Navy’s twenty ships, bravely faced their sure defeat.  However, though genius navigational and tactical skills, America turned the tides.  Recounting this story of a heroic captain and his brave crew, Daughan’s book is the most well rounded, accurate description of the war in more than a century.

Voices of Freedom, February 18th & 25th at The Mariners’ Museum

February 18th:

10:30am - Harriet Tubman, portrayed by Dr. Saundra Cherry: Abolitionist, humanitarian, Union spy during the Civil War and a conductor for the Underground Railroad. 

 11:15am - Dr. Wesley Wilson portrays James Daniels Gardner.  Gardner was born in Gloucester, VA.  He worked as an oysterman before enlisting in the Union Army. He won the Medal of Honor on 9/29/1864; he was a part of the USC (United States Color Troops).  

11:30am - Dr. Saundra Cherry will return and portray Elizabeth Bowser, one of the most prolific union spies of the Civil War, who worked in the Confederate Presidential mansion of Jefferson Davis for 4 years.  She was later enshrined into the US Army Hall of Fame.

February 25th  

This hour long presentation features Walter Darden Jr., portraying Robert Smalls (The Robert Smalls Squadron) with students portraying African American sailors through words and songs.  Robert Smalls was an enslaved African American who, during and after the Civil War, became a ship's pilot, sea captain and politician.

The latest chapter in the Underworld saga marks the return of Kate Beckinsale in the title role of Selene and is the first of the series to be filmed in 3D and released in IMAX.

The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

About Underworld Awakening

Underworld Awakening brings a stunning new dimension to the epic battle between Vampires and Lycans, as the first film in the franchise to shoot in 3D. Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.
