Susan Gibbs event for February 9th from 7:00-9:00pm at The Mariners’ Museum.
The SS United, built in post-World War II Newport News, was designed as a luxury liner and top-secret Cold War weapon that could transport 14,000 troops more than 10,000 miles without refueling. Prior to her retirement in 1969, the ship carried a million passengers across the Atlantic, including four U.S. presidents, moguls, movie stars, tourists, and immigrants. While naval architect William Francis Gibbs oversaw the design of some 6,000 vessels over the course of his career, the SS United States was his greatest accomplishment.
Join The Mariners’ Museum with Susan L. Gibbs, executive director of the SS United States Conservancy and granddaughter of William Francis Gibbs, as she presents her new documentary, SS United States: Made in America.
This event is free for members, $5/non-member

One month from today, the first Peninsula-wide "Empty Bowls" event will be held, February 10, 2012, in partnership with the Peninsula Fine Arts Center (Pfac) and Metro Productions.
Empty Bowls' goal is feed hungry families and individuals in the community. Potters and other local artists donate their talents. When event guests purchase tickets, they receive a simple meal of chef-crafted soup, plus bread, and dessert, plus a handcrafted bowl of their choice. These bowls have been created by local potters, most hand-thrown on a potter's wheel. Live music is provided during the two-hour affair.
The 2012 event will be held 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center located in the Mariners' Museum Park in Newport News. Advance tickets are available - cash or check only - in Newport News, at Peninsula Fine Arts Center; and in Hampton, at Gallery at the Chapman. Tickets are limited due to space considerations: $20 in advance, $25 at the door if tickets are still available. One hundred percent of ticket sales will be donated to local hunger-fighting organizations.
Empty Bowls Virginia Peninsula (EBVP) recipients for 2012 are Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula; FISH Emergency Services of Williamsburg; and Lamb House Street Ministries of Hampton and Newport News.
The Empty Bowls Project was founded as a grassroots effort to raise both money and awareness in the fight against hunger. The project was initiated by a Michigan art teacher during the 1990-91 school-year as a way to raise charitable funds for his community. This idea has expanded across the US and to at least a dozen other countries.
