Richmond Factoids
Saturday, 03 January 2009 00:00

There certainly are a lot of cities with the name Richmond all over the world.  The name Richmond originated from the town of Richmond, North Yorkshire in England, itself named after the town of Richemont, Seine-Maritime in Normandy, in 1071 as part of the Norman conquest.  There is a Richmond, British Columbia, Richmond, Australia, Richmond, South Africa, Richmond, New Zealand, and a Richmond, Jamaica to name a few.  So, too, there are many ‘Richmonds' across the United States.  It seems like there is a Richmond in almost every state - NY, IL, KS, KY, LA, ME, MA, MI, MN, MI, NH, CA, NY, OH, OR, RI, TX, UT, VT, WI all have a Richmond.  But the city we all know and love is in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Richmond, VA is a very cool city with some interesting history for sure.  Here are a few Richmond factoids you may or may not know:

  • In 1775 Richmond, Va. was the site of one of the earliest and most famous meetings, the Second Virginia Convention, where Patrick Henry gave his famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech.
  • Thirteen Fortune 500 companies are headquartered here - Albemarle, Brink's, CarMax Inc., Circuit City Stores, Dominion Resources, Genworth Financial, LandAmerica Financial, Markel, Massey Energy, MeadWestVaco, Owens & Minor, Performance Food Group and Universal.
  • The Richmond Region is one of the top five Best Places to Live and Work in America according to BestJobsUSA.com.
  • Although there are no movie stars buried in Hollywood Cemetery, it is the final resting place of former U.S. presidents John Tyler and James Monroe and Confederate president Jefferson Davis. The cemetery got its name from the holly trees that grow there.
  • Richmond, Va. has more shopping centers per capita than any other city.
  • Richmond is one of only twelve cities in the United States to be home to a Federal Reserve Bank.
  • Richmond's James river offers some of the best urban white water in the nation, from easy Class I rapids to, at times, violent Class V!

It is filled with fresh vegetables, fruits and prepared salads. They feature a standard menu, which includes everything from burgers to quiche, as well as lunch and dinner specials that vary daily.
