Please join the Hampton Roads Naval Museum on Saturday, March 13 at 2 p.m. to celebrate the history of Women in the U.S. Navy, part of the Naval Heritage Series.  Admission is FREE.  Here is a cool tribute to these courageous and amazing women!

The Easter Bunny Comes to Lee Hall

This special event is for children up to age 12 yrs. old. Bring the kids to Lee Hall for their fifth annual Easter Egg hunt. The Easter Bunny will be on hand for games and photo ops. Experience the Antebellum south and tour Lee Hall Mansion. Learn about the history of Richard D. Lee and his family as well as the Peninsula Campaign of 1862. A great family event! Admission is just $5.00 per child.

Built between 1851 and 1859, Lee Hall Mansion was home to affluent planter Richard Decauter Lee. One of the last remaining antebellum homes on the Virginia Peninsula, Lee Hall offers visitors a step back to the mid-Victorian period.

This may be her last chance for freedom. Learn about Eliza, Harriet Tubman, Henry "Box" Brown and other inspiring figures of the Underground Railroad. $3

A Historic Walk at Lee Hall - Walk the Warwick-Yorktown Line

Join Michael Moore for a walk along portions of John B. Magruder's main defensive line across the Peninsula visiting Fort Crafford, Lee's Mill, Skiffes Creek Redoubt, Dam No. 1, and Yorktown. All tours leave from Lee Hall Mansion. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early. Bring a bag lunch, drink, and small cooler. You will be walking a lot. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Sign up early; space is limited.

Payment is due no later than 2 weeks before tour. $45/person, payment guarantees your reservation. No refunds 1 week prior to tour. Make checks payable to Lee Hall Mansion. Mail to: Lee Hall Mansion, 163 Yorktown Road, Newport News, VA 23603.

The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is proud to open 2010 with the esteemed Jerry Taliaferro's talent of his exhibit, Women of a New Tribe. Women of a New Tribe is a stunning national exhibition celebrating the physical and inner beauty of African American women presented in the 1930s to 1940s glamour, fine art black and white photography styles through the award winning lenses of Jerry Taliaferro. In an effort to honor Newport News African American women, 24 local women were picked to be an addition to his normal exhibit.

Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
Cost: $5 Adults/$3 Children
Tickets are available for purchase at the gallery on the day of admittance.

FREE Guided Theme Tours at Hampton Roads Naval Museum - Tuesday, March 9

Lay the Keel

Take a guided tour through our exhibits where you will discover the design history of shipuilding, 11:00 a.m.Explore the development of the U.S. Naval warship with a tour of the museum's ship model collection. Highlights of the tour include an original 1833 half-model of the ship-of-the-line USS Delaware, the original builder's model of the battleship USS Maine, an original spotter's model of the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVB-43), and the original builder's model of the aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66). Tour lasts about one hour.
