Come explore the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond

Posted by admin in Richmond , Museum Exhibits , Historical , American History

Come explore the Museum of the Confederacy!

WhiteHouseoftheConfederacyYou'll find three floors of galleries containing the world's most comprehensive collection of artifacts, manuscripts, and photographs from the Confederate States of America. Be transported back in time as you wander past "Stonewall" Jackson's forage cap, J.E.B. Stuart's LeMat pistol, and Robert E. Lee's field tent. Learn about lesser-known topics like the daily lives of common soldiers, the Confederate Navy, and art from the period.

The centerpiece of the museum complex is a separate structure a few yards north of the museum building, across a shady, peaceful garden. The White House of the Confederacy was where Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his family lived from 1861-1865. Visitors today can tour 11 restored rooms in this early 19th-century mansion, one of the most richly appointed and historically accurate sites remaining from this dramatic period in American history.

Themed White House Tours at the Museum of the Confederacy

Posted by admin in Richmond , Museum Exhibits , Historical , American History

WhiteHouseoftheConfederacyServant Life in the Confederate White House

Thursdays in August at 11:30 a.m.

On Thursday, August 5, the Museum and White House of the Confederacy will begin its series of themed tours with "Servant Life in the Confederate White House." The tour will introduce visitors to the Davis's household staff, which was a diverse group of enslaved African-Americans, free blacks, Irish immigrants and a German florist. As the servants' multifaceted relationships with the Davises are explored, visitors will learn about enslaved African Americans who made daring escapes and others who chose to remain "loyal." Join us as we ponder the answer to questions such as "Did Mary Elizabeth Bowser really work as a spy in the Confederate White House? And what prompted Catherine, the Irish nursemaid, to leave so suddenly?"

The Servant Life in the Confederate White House" tour will be held every Thursday in August at 11:30 am. The cost of the tour is the same as that of the regular White House tour ($9 for adults, $8 for seniors over 62, $5 for youth aged 7 to 13; children under 7 are free).

Robert Schultz & James Shell:

We Were Pirates: A Torpedoman's Pacific War

Friday, August 6, 2010 at 1:00 P.M.

Authors Bob Schultz and James Shell will present their new book We Were Pirates: A Torpedoman's Pacific War. Torpedoman Robert Hunt served on the USS Tambor from 1940 to 1944. During that time, he managed to survive an incredible 12 consecutive war patrols in the Pacific, covering just about every major event in the war against Japan. The authors will present the extraordinary experiences of Hunt as he makes his way from Pearl Harbor, to the Battle of Midway, to Wake Island, and through a near-fatal, seventeen-hour depth-charge attack. Taken largely from Hunt’s war-time diary, Shultz and Shell also discuss the ways in which sailors dealt with the stress of war while at sea or on liberty.

Robert Schultz

Robert Schultz is the Fishwick Professor of English at Roanoke College in Virginia. His books include a novel, The Madhouse Nudes, and two collections of poetry. He has received a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Award in Fiction, Cornell University's Corson Bishop Poetry Prize, and, from The Virginia Quarterly Review, the Emily Clark Balch Prize for Poetry.
