A Charming Bed and Breakfast
Contribted by Kerri Cushna
There is so much history in the coastal town of Virginia Beach. From the architecture to the establishments, it's so clear that there's more to the beach than just sand, waves, shopping and dining. One great example of the roots Virginia Beach has to offer is Barclay Cottage Bed & Breakfast. Built in 1895 and welcoming guests since 1917, Barclay Cottage sits in an historic neighborhood, and is just a minutes' walk away from the Virginia Beach Boardwalk. It is one of only two remaining beach cottages in the city. Barclay Cottage became the home of Lillian St. Claire Barclay and her parents in December of 1916, and began accepting guests in 1917, making Barclay Cottage one of the longest continuously operating lodging facilities in Hampton Roads. It was originally the clubhouse for a golf course on Lake Holly that was never built. It was sold to Vertie Griggs and W.E. Williamson. It was also a school from 1920 until 1970 and in the summer months remained a B&B.
