October 29 – November 7, 2010

Virginia Opera is proud to join nearly 100 other opera companies nationwide to celebrate National Opera Week (October 29 – November 7), organized by OPERA America, the national service organization for opera, with support of the National Endowment for the Arts.

National Opera Week celebrates the vitality of opera in America today and brings the inventiveness and excitement of nowopera to a broader national audience. The strength and diversity of established opera companies, community opera ensembles and opera training programs across the United States will be shared through a variety of free and accessible activities for opera lovers and newcomers to the art form.

Tucked away between Huntington’s Beach and the Rose Garden right before you get to the James River Bridge in Newport News is the Virginia War Museum. From Warwick Boulevard you can’t miss the Chesapeake and Ohio train vwm006-0310engine or the large cannon sitting in the field, but look closer and you’ll see a building filled with all of Virginia’s, all of the nation’s most time-changing history.

"Scary" Family Fun at Virginia Living Museum: Are you ready for a “wild” Halloween time?

Virginia Living Museum offers day and night-time non-scary Halloween fun Oct. 23

Are you ready for a “wild” Halloween time?

The Virginia Living Museum is offering two different Halloween events on Saturday, Oct. 23, both full of non-scary activities for families with kids ages 12 and under.

VLM-NOLM-PumpkinLadyA-09New this year is Hallow-day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enjoy the Halloween decorations and help carve pumpkins for the evening event. Special activities ($2 plus museum admission) include: make Halloween crafts and decorations, Chemical Magic with Larry Sacks, learn the physics of pumpkin chunkin, see fierce and not-so-fierce Halloween critters in live animal shows.

The museum will close at 4 p.m. to prepare for the 11th annual Night of the Living Museum from 5 to 9 p.m.

Come dressed as your favorite character or wild animal.

Enjoy live animal shows featuring fierce and not-so-fierce Halloween critters in the amphitheater

Discover pumpkin carving secrets from the Pumpkin Lady. Hear spooky tales of Halloween from the Storytelling Witch. Learn the ways of spiders large and small from the Spider Lady.

See our Wizard perform amazing magic. Visit the witch’s cave, enchanted forest, pirate cove, ogre’s swamp and magical waterfall. Take a nighttime hike along the outdoor boardwalk.

Make creepy crafts and play Halloween games. There will be trick-or-treating for kids throughout the event.

Observe stars in the Halloween night sky (weather permitting). Hunt for space priates in “Captain Rip Manly vs. The Space Pirates” in the planetarium (no extra charge).

Stay late and see the spook-tacular laser show Fright Light at 8 and 9 p.m. This is a frightfully awesome mix of terror-ific tunes! Wild and weird laser images accompany songs from Black Sabbath, Garbage, The Who and many more! ($6 additional).

Admission to the museum during Hallow-day is $17 for adults and $13 for children (ages 3-12). Special activities are an additional $2.

VLM_LOGO125_RGBFINALTickets for Night of the Living Museum are $10 per person. Museum members pay $7 per person. Children ages 2 and under are free. Children ages 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Advance tickets are $1 off. Admission is full price the day of the event.
