We have received quite a few questions asking us the best place to see World Cup soccer in Williamsburg. So, we thought we'd post our recommendation. It's one answer but two places.... The Green Leafe. Stop by either the downtown location or in New Town and you'll be able to catch all the World Cup games. Not only is the Leafe a great atmosphere but you can enjoy a nice lunch and beer. It's a perfect combination (ask any soccer fan and they'll agree!) The Green Leafe has even been opening early on some occasions to help cheer on Team USA.
Unless you've been living under a rock you know that the USA defeated Algeria this week advancing them to the next round of the World Cup. I couldn't be more excited as it came courtesy of soccer superstar Landon Donovan in an amazing and exciting last minute goal (literally last minute). Team USA will be moving on to the 2nd Round so that means more reason for you to watch the games as the excitement and passion is only going to get more intense.

Soccer. It has never been just a game. It is a culture that leads millions and breaks all barriers. It is an event that draws millions out of despair and into hope. Soccer. Out of poverty and into enrichment. As the warriors storm the grids, the crowd breaks into a deafening roar that shakes magnitudes miles away. Soccer. These players stand for more than just money, fame, or bragging rights. With great weight of nations on their shoulders, they set aside egos and settle political scores on a battleground far more effective than life and death. They accomplish what cannot be done in war. They ride in the winds of cultural pride and leave unhealed wounds of defeat. With nothing but passion to defend them, they set out to take honor for the people they represent. Soccer. For a moment in time, all of life's depressions become irrelevant and this moment becomes life. Striving on emotions, the only truth they know; win or lose...just make sure to have fun!

Well, if you're like me June can't come soon enough. I suppose it really isn't that far away...only 66 days (about two more months). My personal recommendation for the best place to catch the games in Richmond is Penny Lane Pub.
Not only is it a great place to enjoy a few pints but it's the perfect atmosphere to watch the games. They always play the English and European football games and the 2010 FIFA World Cup is no exception. And this year's World Cup is going to be good. The World Cup takes place in South Africa with teams from all over the globe. Here are the countries playing in their respective groups:
Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France
Group B: Argentina, Nigeria, Korea Republic, Greece
Group C: England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia
Group D: Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana
Group E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon
Group F: Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia
Group G: Brazil, Korea DPR, Côte d'Ivoire, Portugal
Group H : Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile

Over 100 players will attend the Richmond Kickers 12th Annual Player Combine this weekend, February 19-21 at the Kickers state-of-the-art sports complex, Ukrop Park. Players representing 18 countries from around the world, including the U.S., Paraguay, Ivory Coast, Italy, Ecuador, Nigeria, Jamaica, Cameroon, Mexico, Argentina, England, Trinidad & Tobago, Bolivia, Liberia, Togo (West Africa), Brazil, Canada, Japan, Belgium and Peru will participate in three days of intense training, including small-sided games, speed testing and full-sided matches.
"The Pro Combine is the most important event of the year for identifying players," explains Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer and Head Coach. "We typically sign two-three players from this event and it has proven to be a valuable resource for the coaching staff. This year, we expect a high level of play with participants traveling from around the globe to try and secure a professional contract with the Kickers."
