Experience Vinyasa Yoga in Williamsburg

Posted by admin in Yoga , Williamsburg , Sports/Athletics

chaterangaVinyasa (pron. vin-yaah-sa) is derived from the Sanskrit term nyasa, which means "to place," and the prefix vi, "in a special way"-as in the linking of one yoga pose to the next. In the yoga world the most common understanding of vinyasa is as a flowing sequence of specific yoga poses coordinated with the movements of the breath and gets you from pose to pose. The practice becomes a flow timed to the breath instead of just a series of discrete postures. The vinyasa gives rhythm to the practice, keeps the heat building, builds upper body strength and acts as a counterpose to stretch the legs and re-set the spine to neutral for the next sequence.

What can I expect in a Vinyasa Yoga class?
Expect a energetic flow style practice with different poses each time and lots of emphasis on the breath. It is a very dynamic, rigorous, and transformative practice. With regular practice you'll quickly develop strength, endurance and mental focus over time.

What is Hot Yoga?

Posted by Graham Phillips in Yoga , Williamsburg

Contributed by Genice Phillips

hotyogaI just started yoga a few months ago, and I must say how much I enjoy the benefits - improved flexibility, increased mental awareness and focus, not to mention it relieves stress. Recently, I have been searching for more information on different types of yoga, and I ran across an interesting style of yoga, called Bikram or Hot Yoga. It's a more intense form of yoga, involving vigorous poses in a heated room of 95-100 degrees. It can definitely be scorching!

Developed in the late 1970's by yoga expert, Bikram Choudhoury, hot yoga relaxes the muscles and secretes toxins from your body, offering a mental and physical cleansing. Moving through 26-30 positions with deep stretching and increased circulation and blood flow throughout the body, it can be a great detoxification and renewal process. But be careful and take precaution when trying out this challenging class. Dehydration and dizziness may occur, so make sure to bring plenty of water and wear loose clothing.

Body Balance Studio in Williamsburg has all the information you need in participating in a hot yoga class. As well, they offer other classes, for those who are more sensitive to excess heat. Try Vinyasa Yoga that focuses on movements that flow from one position to the next, creating a cardiovascular, strengthening workout. Visit the website for pricing of classes and times.
