A Brief History of Valentine's Day

Posted by WR Murphy in Untagged

cupidThe middle of February has been a time for love since ancient times, when St. Valentine performed marriages for eager young couples in the face of Roman oppression. Then, during the Middle Ages, young knights who were courting a lady may have taken February 14, which is the feast day honoring St. Valentine, as an occasion to present their beloved with songs and recited poetry.

Happy New Year Hampton Roads

"Auld Lang Syne" is a tune and a saying that we hear a lot around the holidays. It means "old times gone," and is the title of an old folk song. It has been famously recorded by a number of people. It's what they sing in the final, joyful scene of It's a Wonderful Life. Robert Burn originally wrote down the words, which he learned from an old man in Scotland, and sent them to a museum so that they could be preserved.
