Martin Luther King, Jr. was born Michael King Jr. on January 15, 1929. When he was five years old, his father, a Baptist preacher, changed both his and his son’s name from Michael to Martin Luther, adding the ponderous weight of a historical namesake to his son’s young shoulders. After finishing high school, King set out to Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, PA, intending to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

Robert Burn originally wrote down the words, which he learned from an old man in Scotland, and sent them to a museum so that they could be preserved.
