A Colonial Williamsburg Christmas
Wednesday, 26 November 2008 00:00
Christmas is literally right around the corner.  December 7th marks the beginning of the holiday season in Williamsburg with the ever popular Grand Illumination.

The celebration begins at 4:45 p.m. on outdoor stages throughout the Historic Area. Colonial Williamsburg's Fifes and Drums will play as costumed performers present holiday themed entertainment found in Williamsburg over two hundred years ago.

At 5:45 p.m., the Fifes and Drums sound the beginning of the Grand Illumination.  At 6:15 p.m., candles are lit in public buildings, shops and homes (which will burn throughout the entire holiday season). You can then expect quite a show as the skies over Williamsburg are "illuminated" with fireworks launched at three Historic Area locations: the Governor's Palace, Magazine and Capitol. After the fireworks, entertainment continues on the outdoor stages until 7:30 p.m.

Thanks to history.org for the evening's details!

Travelers from all over the East Coast come to experience this unforgettable Grand Illumination.  So, come to CW and celebrate the holiday spirit but be prepared for the crowds as this is a super popular event.  Parking can be a bear so consider coming early to get a good spot.  And dress warmly because it will most likely be pretty chilly.

Plan on making reservations and take in a late lunch or dinner in Merchant's Square.  Visit nearby Aromas or Seasons Restaurant for lunch beforehand or dinner afterwards.  They are both featured in the Insider's Passport to Williamsburg and offer delicious options!
