PFAC FREE WEEKEND CELEBRATES ARTS & EDUCATION SEPT. 4 & 5
The U.S. House of Representatives designated the second week of September as "Arts in Education Week." In early celebration, Peninsula Fine Arts Center is offering free admission all weekend Saturday, September 4, 10 am-5 pm, and Sunday, September 5, 1-5 pm.
Artist Polly Hold will lead adults and children in the creation of a mosaic mural on Saturday, Sept. 4 from 2 to 4 pm. Nicknamed "Polly's Forest," the mural will depict a colorful landscape filled with all manner of flora and fauna constructed of recycled ceramics, pottery and tile.
To enhance the visitor experience throughout the weekend, and to ensure parents are aware of all the many child development activities and resources that Pfac offers, docents will demonstrate family gallery games, and education volunteers will be on-hand to assist in the Hand On For Kids gallery.
Developed by Pfac Educator Janet Rash, each activity is designed to enhance learning and build skills applicable to other areas of work and play. Many of the activities are geared to support Virginia Standards of Learning.
Pfac's Hands On For Kids gallery is a dedicated space where children find inspiration and materials to make original works of art. They can create a collage from magazine pictures and art supplies. Fabric, yarn, beads, batting, ribbon, and other objects can be found at the Sculpture Table to construct a 3-D figure.
Located in the lobby, the Family Activity Center has games related to the art on display to encourage interaction between parents and children that foster critical thinking, problem solving and other forms of learning.
Admission to Pfac is free during the first weekend of every month is made possible by a generous grant from is the Noland Foundation.
