Pilates 101
What exactly is Pilates?
The Pilates based method of training is designed to work the whole body in an efficient and balanced way. Our focus is on re-educating your body's neuromuscular system and releasing inefficient patterns of movement allowing you to get in touch with the most effective ways of being in the body. The philosophy of awareness in movement and total body/mind workout is the foundation of Pilates at Body Balance Studio.
Integration of proper alignment, body positioning and correct breathing throughout the exercise program promotes a strong development of the core muscles of the trunk (such as abdominals and back muscles). Achieving greater stability of the core muscles provides an inner "girdle" and a return to ideal posture allowing movement with grace and ease. Results include long, lean muscle tone with a strong abdominal center.

What is the Pilates Reformer?
The Pilates Reformer is a piece of Pilates equipment. It is a bed like frame with a moveable carriage where a person sits or reclines and does his or her stretching. It is an excellent way of exercising and strengthening the muscles without hurting the joints .
Is Pilates just for women?
Far from it. Pilates, after all, was invented by a man, Joseph Pilates, originally for his own benefit. What's more, men tend to be less flexible than women and may need Pilates even more. There are many celebrities who practice Pilates on a regular basis including Hugh Grant, John Cleese, Ian McKellen, Patrick Swayze, and growing number of famous football players, soccer players and professional athletes.
