Celebrate National S'mores Day
Friday, 07 August 2009 00:00

smoresAugust 10th has to be the best day in America: S'mores day. I've always wondered what brilliant individual came up with the ingenious combination of graham, chocolate, and marshmallow, toasted. S'mores have always been such a summer treat. I think they taste best while camping; after a long day of hiking and sightseeing, relaxing over the campfire, eating marshmallows for dinner is perfect.

Some people desire their marshmallows only a little warm, while others like to eat them on fire. I, however, am a traditional marshmallow toaster/eater. I put my marshmallow on a stick (the kind from nature, not any fancy metal skewer - I find that the taste of a little bark enhances the flavor) and put it way down into the heat of the coals, turning slowly. A nicely browned toasted marshmallow goes straight into the pre-prepared layers of graham cracker and half-a-bar of Hershey's milk chocolate. Tip: use the edges of both graham crackers to scrape the marshmallow off of the stick, and you won't get burned, sticky hands. Then, I eat this delectable treat, making sure that my face is sufficiently sticky by the time I am ready for my second.

August 10th is a very important national holiday. Even if you can't make it to the campground, fire up the grill out back and make some modern day style s'mores. Don't be afraid to be innovative!

I love s'mores as much as anyone else. But I gotta ask: Why is the national day for such a great campfire treat celebrated in the middle of the summer? Why not in October or another cooler, campfire friendly season?
