Chocolate In the Wine?
Contributed by Mary Griffith
It is hard to believe that February is almost over and we're almost half way through March! Maybe you still have some left over Valentines chocolates around, or if you live in Williamsburg, you may have attended the Chocolate Affair on February 20. So in thinking about chocolate, I thought I would research some wines that had a chocolate aspect in their descriptions. I also wanted to stick to wines that were $10 or less because it has been said and proven that you don't have to spend more than this to have a great bottle of wine.
Now, having said this, one of my favorite things to pair with chocolate is a Muscat. It is such a warming, wonderful drink, that even if you don't have a chocolate to pair with it (in my opinion a caramel works the BEST), then you would enjoy the Muscat all by itself-savoring each sip slowly.
Back to the wine--- 14 Hands Cabernet Sauvignon (2007) with 78% Cabernet Sauvignon sells for $9.91 per bottle. Here is what Winery Notes has to say about this wine: 14 Hands Cabernet Sauvignon features aromas of black currants and plums with subtle hints of cedar and dried herbs. Dark stone fruit flavors are complements by a touch of chocolate and accentuated by fine, round tannins.
Benziger Family Winery Pinot Noir (2007)
Benziger Pinot Noir is marked by aromas of cherry and black plum which give way to flavors of black cherry, chocolate and dried herb with subtle oak notes. The wine shows a rich middle mouthfeel, a silky texture, chalky tannins and a long, creamy finish- according to Winery Notes.
ChocoVine is a fine French Cabernet subtly combined with a rich dark chocolate from Holland, paired together to create a decadent, silky smooth drink. It can be served on the rocks or as the main ingredient to an array of sinful cocktails. This also happens to be a gluten free product.
Certainly there are many wines that can say they have a hint of chocolate or chocolate undertones. Your taste buds are the real judge! Enjoy experimenting with different wines and keep a wine journal, especially of those you really like.
Happy Tasting!
