Insider's Sweet Tooth Review: Oohh, La La, the Decadent Desserts at Can Can Brasserie
Wednesday, 30 June 2010 00:00

The Can Can Brasserie is a loud and lively restaurant in Carytown that specializes in fine French cuisine. What drew me in initially was the "front row seating," the tables closest to Cary Street where the windows fold back so it feels like you're sitting in the open air. I have spent some time in France and one of my favorite things about the country were the quaint patisseries with the outdoor seating. I feel it's a welcome break from reality to enjoy a pastry, a cup of coffee and a book, and if you can't travel all the way to France, the Can Can Brasserie is a fine place to do it.

I have a sumptuous sweet tooth.

We all knew a kid growing up who always had some sort of food on their face, right? Well that kid was me, and it was always chocolate. Cake, chocolate chip cookies, puddings, pies; I love it all. So you can imagine how pumped I was to go explore the Can Can Brasserie's dessert section, and what a selection it was! Let's start with lunchtime desserts. You have your pick of a chocolate chess tart, a trio of sorbets or ice creams, lemon pecan tart, chilled peach soup, or chocolate cheesecake. Dessert first? Yes, please!

Now onto the dinner desserts (can you hear the herald's trumpet in the background?): You can choose from two seasonal items, either the blueberry soufflé or the lime and coconut cake. The traditional items they serve are the trio of sorbets or ice creams and chocolate crème brulee. You may also choose from the chocolate items such as the chocolate ice cream cake sandwich, triple layer mousse, pastel de tres leches (chocolate cake, cookies and cream ice cream and chocolate-vanilla sauce. Holy moly!). The fruit selections on the menu are the bruleed banana split and the lemon pecan tart. Click here to see the full dessert menu.

While I wanted to order a smattering of desserts, I showed restraint and ordered one. I could not get past the pastel de tres leches. A) I had never had it, B) I figured it was only fitting to order something with a French title while I was sampling desserts at a French restaurant, and C) did you hear that description? How could you NOT order it?! One thing is for certain, I will definitely be going back to the Can Can Brasserie (well, two things are certain) and I will definitely be getting back on my running regiment so I can sample all of those decadent desserts!
