Explore History in Richmond: The Road to Revolution & Patrick Henry's Legacy in Virginia
Thursday, 29 October 2009 00:00

Contributed by Diana Fakhouri

patrick-henryDespite his role as the first governor of the Commonwealth, Patrick Henry's legacy as a Virginia politician is sometimes overshadowed by his presidential peers Jefferson and Washington. This month, take a ride through Virginia's colonial history on the Road to Revolution and discover the man who led Americans to liberty!

The trail directs history buffs to spots where Henry lived, worked, and fought for the Revolution. The first stop is St. John's Church, recognized in its own right for hosting the Second Virginia Convention in March 1775. At the debate, Henry immortalized himself with his infamous declaration, "Give me liberty, or give me death!" His fiery spirit incensed Americans from Georgia to New Hampshire to take up arms and fight British rule.

Other Road to Revolution sites include Patrick Henry's homes, acquired through birthright and marriage, such as Scotchtown and the tobacco farm Pine Slash. Hampden-Sydney College also played an integral role in Henry's life; Henry was instrumental in the College's founding in 1775 and six of his sons with wife Sarah Shelton studied there.
