Fall Staycation Ideas: Richmond, VA
Friday, 09 October 2009 09:19

Contributed by WR Murphy

Richmond has become an increasingly popular vacation site in recent years - it's easy to get to from DC and Southern Maryland, and it offers a more urban, varied background for visitors than the perennially popular Williamsburg. Because of this increasing popularity, I wanted to mention a few fun things that I think a person ought to do when they visit Richmond, and stay for a while.

One fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon is to take a Segway tour of Richmond. These tours are offered from a small, friendly, downtown office, are not too physically taxing, and are a lot of fun. There are a variety of different tours available, including a tour of the famous Petersburg battlefield. Or, if you want to explore the downtown without worrying too much about parking or having too walk very far, you can simply rent a Segway for the afternoon, and ride it around.

legenddeckIt's October now, which puts me, for one, in mind of good beer, and I think I should mention that the Legend Brewing Company offers tours of their brewery on Saturdays. They also have live music on Friday and Sunday, and great food and beer every day, so Legend Brewing is a good bet all around.

Richmond is an old city, and it's not exactly devoid of historical monuments of its own. Visitors can see the state capital, the houses of many prominent figures from US history, and St. John's Church, the site of Patrick Henry's famous "Give me Liberty or Give me Death," speech. Also of Revolutionary significance, the famous Hanover Courthouse can be visited easily from Richmond. It was at this site that Patrick Henry launched his political career, and where some of the first rumblings of the American Revolution made themselves heard.

Richmond also has a number of neat museums. The Science Museum of Virginia, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, the John Marshall House Museum, the Children's Museum of Richmond, and the Black History Museum and Culture Center, to name but a few.

There are lots of fun things to do in Richmond, and I hope that the ideas mentioned above will give visitors to our commonwealth's lovely capital a good idea of how they could start spending their time there. It's a wonderful city. Enjoy your stay!
