Fun in Downtown Hampton - the Historic Hampton Carousel
Tuesday, 02 March 2010 00:00

Contributed by WR Murphy

HamptonCarouselEntertaining the kids on the weekend has been a primary concern of parents since time immemorial, and modern science has pretty well demonstrated that leaving it up to the television is not the way to go, so when I found out that downtown Hampton has a restored 1920s merry-go-round, I got really excited and had to share it. For a couple bucks a ride, between noon and five on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, children (and adults who feel young) can enjoy this old fashioned good time. This merry-go-round is the real deal - kids sit on painted unicorns and fantastic horses that move up and down as they circle to the sound of old circus music. What could be more fun?

From the parents' perspective, this type of outing is ideal. It keeps the kids happy, it's probably something they've never done before, or at least not done recently, and best of all, it's good, clean fun for a very low price. It's a great way to make a Saturday afternoon really special for a few children, it provides an opportunity to take some really adorable pictures, and it's right in downtown Hampton. Enjoy!

The Virginia Air & Space Center has started the Hampton Carousel Restoration Project, enabling community members to contribute towards the restoration of the famed Carousel. So recall what it was like to ride the carousel as a child or with a child and help preserve the experience for future children.  Click here to make an online donation to the Hampton Carousel Restoration Project.
