St. John's Church: Reenactments & Tours

Contributed by Quinn Simmons

We've all learned about Patrick Henry's famous "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" speech, but even after living here for an entire year I had no idea that he uttered those words at the St. John's Church right here in Richmond! St. John's became a living memorial when over 100 Virginia colonial leaders, including Patrick Henry, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson met there to avoid the angry Lord Dunmore. This summer there are a plethora of opportunities to tour, watch reenactments and get your history on at St. John's Church.

Daily-guided tours take place inside the church and run 30 minutes with tours beginning every hour and half hour until 4:00 (last tour of the day is at 3:30). Prices are: $6/adults, $5/seniors (62+) $4/ages 7-18, free/under 7.

A graveyard tour discusses the lives of important Virginians buried at St. John's including George Wythe, the first Virginia signer of the Declaration of Independence, Edward Carrington, the first US Marshal for Virginia, and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, mother of the famed poet Edgar Allan Poe.

The summer reenactment schedule occurs each Sunday from Memorial Day through Labor Day. At 1:00, free tickets are distributed at the front door, with patriotic music on a 1905 Stein organ (how cool is that?!) beginning at 1:30. The reenactment program starts at 2:00 where you will see famous Virginians and actually hear Patrick Henry declare his everlasting words. What a perfect Sunday!
