Giving Back - Send a Thanksgiving Basket from Taylor Made for You
Tuesday, 17 November 2009 00:00

By WR Murphy

fall-harvestThe abundance that comes with the fall harvest has inspired generosity in human beings for countless generations. The ancient Israelites would leave remnants of their crops lying in the fields so that the impoverished could gather up and share them, and more recently, the same abundant spirit of the harvest season inspired the Native Americans and English settlers to to feast together - an event still celebrated at Thanksgiving.

In Medieval Europe, Michaelmas (i.e. the Feast of St. Michael), around the time of the Fall Equinox, marked the end of the harvest, and the beginning of the final quarter of the year. This holiday was celebrated with feasting and merriment. In some traditions, Michaelmas marks the last day of the year on which blackberries can be picked. Some also believe that pulling petals from a flower one by one and saying "she loves me, she loves me not" was an act originally associated with this holiday.

My favorite memory of harvest time comes from my high school days, when some friends and I would go out gleaning the crops. Crop gleaning, nowadays, means going out into the fields and picking up leftovers - crops that wouldn't pass muster at the supermarket, but are still perfectly edible - and donating them to the local homeless shelter. This memory always puts me in a good mood in the fall, and sets the tone for the holidays.
