Hampton Cup Regatta 2009
Sunday, 09 August 2009 00:00

If you've never seen a boat race then you have to check this one out! The Hampton Cup Regatta has run since 1926 so this year marks its 83rd consecutive year running. The Regatta has gone from a loosely regulated race, to an official event sanctioned by UIM which is the world powerboat racing sanctioning body, the American Powerboat Association, and Canadian Boat-racing Federation. The Regatta is the oldest of its kind in North America.

This year the Hampton Cup will take place on August 14th, 15th and 16th from 10AM to 5PM.  This is a really exciting event that draws people from all over the U.S.  These boats are fast, loud and so fun to watch!  There will be 9 different boat classes with top speeds for the classes ranging from 110 to 170 mph.

Not only can you watch the exciting boat races but there will also be a "Bash on the Bridge" on Friday night at 7PM-10PM. This is a big party featuring the the band, Element and lots of refreshments. In addition to the racing, there will also be a children's area with clowns and activities, displays by a number of different organizations, model boat flotilla, a local car club, animal displays and food vendors.  Pit passes will also be available so you can go down into the pits, meet some of the drivers, get a good look at the boats and really get a feel for what goes into keeping these boats going.

So, where can you see all the action? The best vantage points for the race are Fort Monroe and the Mercury Boulevard Bridge. The Mercury Boulevard Bridge is a great place if you want to get wet since the tails from the boats can fan out some serious water.

The races are free and open to the public. The bridge opens at 10AM to the public. Races start at 12:00 Noon and end at approximately 5PM daily in Mill Creek, located at the entrance of Fort Monroe from the East Mercury Boulevard bridge in Hampton, Virginia.
