Hashbrowns and More at the Five Forks Café
Contributed by Ann Jurczyk
Whether you're craving breakfast food at 2:00 pm, feeling like fried fish on Friday night, or absolutely, positively HAVE to down some hashbrowns, your best bet in Williamsburg is Five Forks Café.
There's nothing pretentious about Five Forks, but the food is a far cry from typical diner fare. This weekend's breakfast specials included "gooey cinnamon buns" and smoked salmon, egg and red onion caper relish served on a croissant. The dinner specials were a prime rib dinner and a shrimp and mahi-mahi combo. Wednesday is "people's choice" night, which last week was fresh rockfish.
The line outside the door on Saturday and Sunday mornings attests to how popular consistently good food can be. The college students and the after-church crowd line up to order the huevros rancheros, omelets, and Williamsburg's best hash browns!
The lunch specials vary daily, but you won't go wrong by ordering the Rueben (they cook their own corned beef), the burgers, or the pork BBQ off the menu. All sandwiches and burgers come with a generous serving of fries.
Paula Deen would approve of the dinner menu's southern leanings. The roast turkey dinner, liver and onions, and hamburger steak with mushroom gravy are all accompanied by mashed potatoes and a side dish. Dinner is simple, but done well. Reduced price "blue plate" specials are available from 3-5 pm.
Five Forks Café is located on John Tyler Highway. Breakfast is served from 7-3, lunch from 11-5 Tuesday-Saturday, dinner 5-8 Tuesday through Saturday. Five Forks is closed on Monday.
Dieters might be disappointed to find that outside of its salads, there aren't many healthy choices at Five Forks Café. But hey, if you're looking for a 550 calorie or less entrée, there's always Applebees. Meanwhile, make my hash browns smothered, ok?
