Ironclad Revolution at the Mariners Museum
Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:00

Contributed by WR Murphy mariner-anniversary

The Mariners Museum, right here in Newport News, Virginia, received the prestigious American Association of Museum's award for Excellence in Exhibition in April 2008. The prize was awarded for the museum's excellence in presenting the USS Monitor Ironclad Revolution Exhibition. Fortunately, we can still go see this wonderful, education, and award-winning exhibition. It features the turret, steam engine, and cannon from the USS Monitor, and many interactive and educational displays.

This exhibition presents a fantastic opportunity for us to learn about an important part of our history. It seems to me that the naval aspects of the Civil War are often less talked about then the others, though they are hugely important, not only for their affect on the outcome of the war, but also for the technological advancement that occurred. The invention of ironclad warships changed naval combat forever, immediately rendering hundreds of years of tactics and shipbuilding methods obsolete, and forever encasing the warships of the world's navies in cold, impenetrable iron.
