The second annual Italian Film Festival will debut at the Williamsburg Library Theatre on Tuesday, Jan. 13 with the Academy Award-winning film "Mediterraneo," to be followed Tuesday, Feb. 17 by the classic "The Bicycle Thief," and Tuesday, March 17 by the romantic comedy "Bread and Tulips." The films are in Italian with English subtitles. The Festival is co-sponsored by the Library and The Colonial Italian American Organization (CIAO). The films will be shown at 7 p.m. each date at the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend both the film and the reception following. The festival is a continuation of CIAO's mission to raise awareness of the rich cultural heritage of Italian art, language, music and film, according to Angelo Guastaferro, chairman. Patrick Golden, program services director of the Williamsburg Regional Library, said "the library is pleased to partner with CIAO on the second year of this festival, which will be enjoyed by all, whether they are Italian or not." The highlight of the festival is certainly the showing of Mediterraneo. Whatever you can ask for in a film is sure to be found in Mediterraneo. This is certainly one of the best European films of the decade; very warm, appealing, and hilarious. The story of a small group of Italian soldiers (they're not actually very soldier-like) stranded on a beautiful Greek island during Second World War is very nicely depicted by director Gabriele Salvatores. The characters of Nicola Lorusso, Raffaele Montini and the soldier in love with Vassilisa are great. The island itself is beautiful, which calls to some incredible cinematography. The musical score is spectacular, a delicious medley of Italian and Greek folkloric music. Mediterraneo is in color and has a run time of 96 minutes.
