Kid Friendly Activities in Norfolk
Sunday, 25 October 2009 07:10

Contributed by Genice Phillips

With hectic schedules and busy workloads, taking time out for the family can be a very tiring experience. Luckily, Norfolk has loads of events and activities geared towards children of all ages, as well as something that can be just as enjoyable for the parents. So, here are some of my top activities for kids around the Norfolk area.

Nauticus - The National Maritime Center
For the science or math whiz kid, this a great place for those interested in the modern maritime world. Interactive exhibits, high-definition films, and other facts about Navy history encapsulate the museum. One of their featured programs, Ghost Tails and Pirate Trails, is a 90 minute walking tour centered on true facts and stories about pirates in Norfolk. Fridays and Saturdays, until November 20, 2009. http://www.nauticus.org/

Virginia Zoo
Featuring over 350 animals, this zoo has received raving reviews on the multiple exhibits and exciting animals around the 53 acre landscape. Hop on the Zoo Train for a friendly tour of the grounds, and take a quick glance at the red panda exhibit. Come see the va_zoo_logo-full_color1newborn Masai giraffe, born October 21, 2009. She is already six feet tall! Last but not least, the event, ZooBoo, is just in time for Halloween. Arrive in costume to see the ghoulish transformation of the zoo. Candy stations and haunted hayrides will keep the children busy (and probably a little more hyper than usual).

Chrysler Museum of Art
Noted as one of the top art museums in the Hampton Roads area, this fine art museum is filled with diverse art collections and activities for the whole family. It contains more than 30,000 piece of artwork that span 4,000 years of history. Browse collections on African, European, and American paintings, sculpture, and other art mediums. Admission is free.
