There's a big misconception that the only things to do in Hampton Roads is Colonial Williamsburg and Virginia Beach. Although there are an array of attractions in the other cities and counties in between, there's a bigger myth that after Labor Day, the Beach is dead until the first blossoms of spring. False. Just because the only people brave enough to enjoy the Beach in the off-season are die-hard surfers and the swimmers during February's Polar Plunge, doesn't mean there's nothing else to be experienced in Virginia Beach.
After all, there are many creeks and rivers to be explored. The best way to do this is to get your kayaks and paddles and head towards any one of these channels. Amateurs can get all their gear and guides at Surf and Adventure Company in Sandbridge where you can get a chance to tour Back Bay Creek. Or just kayak along the shore. Land lovers can take brisk walks and be one with nature in Virginia Beach's 4,000 acres of parks and refuge. Walk along the seashore or at Cypress Birding Trail and see if you can spot our local fowl friends. From osprey to warblers. Get a head start at the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum at Witt Cottage. Or see if you can get something to bite off of one of the many piers or fishing excursions.
You can also take pictures at Cape Henry of the pristine Chesapeake Bay and the lighthouses. Now through the end of the month, enjoy a haunted hayride at the Hunt Club Farm or pick pumpkins at Taylor Farms. For more suspense, reserve your tickets for Angelo's Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. I hear people are always dying to get in...or is it out? Take in some modern art at the Virginia Contemporary Arts Center. See how wildlife prepares for the winter at the Virginia Aquarium. For the athletes, try one of the over 20 golf courses in the city, or train at the Sportsplex.
With the holidays just around the corner, there's plenty of shopping to be done all over the Beach. Choose from either mall, Lynnhaven or Pembroke, or try some chic merchandise at not-so-chic prices in one of the many shops in Town Center or Hilltop Shopping Centre. And the best way to ring in the merry cheer is to experience McDonald's Holiday Lights at the Beach on Atlantic Avenue November 19th through January 2nd.
So just because you might not be able to work on your tan doesn't mean there's nothing to do at the Beach. Get your oars or loafers ready, because whether it's paddling or shopping ‘til you're dropping, Virginia Beach is very much alive in the fall.
Stay at the beautiful Barclay Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Virginia Beach, a Virginia Beach bed and breakfast, and step back to a time when things moved more slowly and life was less hectic. Leave your stress behind and check-in to Barclay Cottage B&B.
