The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is proud to open 2010 with the esteemed Jerry Taliaferro's talent of his exhibit, Women of a New Tribe. Women of a New Tribe is a stunning national exhibition celebrating the physical and inner beauty of African American women presented in the 1930s to 1940s glamour, fine art black and white photography styles through the award winning lenses of Jerry Taliaferro. In an effort to honor Newport News African American women, 24 local women were picked to be an addition to his normal exhibit.
Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Cost: $5 Adults/$3 Children Tickets are available for purchase at the gallery on the day of admittance.
Chasing George Washington: A White House Adventure
Thursday, March 4, 10:00am & 1:00pm & Friday, March 5, 10:00am & 1:00pm Ella Fitzgerald Theater at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center
In this special project with the White House Historical Association, the Kennedy Center stages an exciting new musical about a group of students on a tour who meet past White House residents, including George Washington.

Oldies, But Goodies Movie Series
Featuring: The Wizard of Oz Tuesday, March 9, 1:00pm Ella Fitzgerald Theater at Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center
The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is a cultural destination for the entire family, including our community seniors. We are presenting the Oldies, But Goodies Movie Series on the 2nd Tuesday of every month for senior citizens. All Movies will be from the "Golden Age" of film. New England Conservatory - Sirocco Winds Youth Workshop
Wednesday, March 24, 4:00pm Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center
New England Conservatory woodwind quintet Sirocco Winds, in town with the Virginia Arts Festival and in concert for Arts Within Reach. Each year, an audition committee of professional musicians selects a few exceptional student ensembles to represent the NEC Honors Program. The Sirocco Winds, coached by John Heiss, features Anne Gregory, flute, Andrew Mee, horn, Ambrose Tucker, clarinet, Mary Lynch, oboe, and Chris Watford, bassoon.
Audience: Grades K-5 Free with Reservations
Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center - Advisory Board Meeting

The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center Advisory Board is comprised of Newport News citizens and community leaders with a passion for and understanding of the Arts. The purpose of the Advisory Board is to advise city staff in the management of the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center. The Board meets at noon in the Executive Conference Room of the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center on the fourth Thursday of each month. Meetings follow an agenda and are open to the public.
Pearl Bailey Comedy Showcase starring Cocoa Brown

To celebrate what would have been Newport News Icon Pearl Bailey's 92nd birthday, The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center will honor Pearl Bailey with a comedy showcase the last weekend of March to annually celebrate her many talents as a celebrated comedienne, singer, entertainer and comedy as an art form. Kicking off this annual event will be National Comedian/Actress Cocoa Brown who hails from Newport News along with some special guests!
Audience: Adult Tickets are $10
