I don't know for sure, but I would be willing to bet that most of you have a friend, or at least an acquaintance, who takes the whole New Year's Eve celebration a little bit too far. It might be extravagance in preparing for the party, or in dressing up, or simply in drinking too much. I have a suggestion for you, which may help you keep the party safer, and more fun, for everyone.
When you're planning the party, get everyone who is likely to be there together, or on the same email list, and set out a few guidelines that you all hope to follow. Set spending limits on gift exchanges, and try to get everyone to pitch in towards the purchase of party supplies. See if everyone will promise not to get too terribly drunk - taking care of one friends who's sick from drinking can ruin everyone's party. Lastly, and most importantly, make sure they all know where they're sleeping and how they're going to get there. Drunk driving is a real problem in this country, and the way to prevent it is to make plans before everyone's a few champagnes into the night and trying to figure out how to get home. If you can, I would make sleeping arrangements that minimize everyone's driving; even with a sober driver, the wee hours of January 1 are a dangerous time to be on the road. Stay safe, and have fun!

cents and tell us all about it.
