Popular New Year's Resolutions: Time Management Tips to get the Most Out of your Free Time
Thursday, 07 January 2010 00:00
Contributed by Diana Fakhouri

Who hasn't made improving time management skills a New Year's resolution?! Not only is it one of the most popular goals, it's also vital to tackling all the jobs that were overlooked throughout the holidays. Don't stress over the mountain of paperwork waiting at the office - you'll be back on top soon enough with our time management tips!

manage-time1) Maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Feeling good at work starts with feeling good at home - eat your fruits and veggies, exercise, and take time to de-stress when you can.

2) Start your day IMMEDIATELY! We're all guilty of wasting time (okay, a lot of time) checking email, checking headlines, checking voicemail... you know the drill. If you're not waiting on a super important message, spend time working on an important task as soon as you get to work. Chipping away at it will make it easier to complete in the long run.

3) Use To-Do lists. No, not just on the day you decide to give in and make one, but each morning - or evening before you leave the office - write out a few tasks you need to achieve. Knowing what you need to do helps you get started faster. Reorganize your list each day so you always know what needs to be done.

4) Don't be afraid to ask for help or delegate tasks. Knowing when to do so is a sign of leadership, and will help you become a more efficient member of your team.

5) Everyone needs a break! Just make sure you keep them short and sweet so you won't lose focus. Grab some water or soda, chat with a co-worker, or take a short walk around the office. You'll come back reenergized and ready to take on the rest of the day!
