“Seal of Honor” Book Signing at the Mariners' Museum - July 17

On June 28, 2005, Murphy, of New York, was the officer in charge of a four-man SEAL team near Asadabad, Afghanistan. A large Taliban force engaged his group, and Murphy could not make radio contact. Having suffered grave gunshot wounds already, he moved into the open to transmit a call. He was shot in the back, but picked up the receiver and completed the call.

By the end of the hours-long fight, which continued over cliffs and hills, three of the four SEALS, including Murphy, 29, Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Danny Dietz, 21, of Virginia Beach, and Sonar Technician 2nd Class Matthew Axelson, 29, of California, had died. The remaining SEAL, Petty Officer First Class Marcus Luttrell, of Texas, was rescued, and subsequently co-authored the New York Times bestseller Lone Survivor.

On July 17, The Mariners’ Museum will host author Gary Williams for a signing of his May 2010-release book, Seal of Honor: Operation Red Wings and the Life of Lt. Michael P. Murphy.

Murphy was the first to receive the Medal of Honor in Afghanistan and the first naval officer to receive it since the Vietnam War. Also speaking will be Murphy’s father, Dan Murphy. Murphy’s mother, Maureen, and brother, John, will also be in attendance.

The book signing starts at 4:00 p.m., and is free to museum visitors and members and to retired and active military. For others, the event is $5. For more information, call 757-591-7749 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
