St. John's Church Tradition-Court End Christmas 12/13
Monday, 30 November 2009 00:00

stjohnsContributed by CW Burke

Court End was developed in the Federal era after Virginia's capital moved from Williamsburg to Richmond. Every December for the past 22 years, to celebrate the rich history of Court End, historic sites in the neighborhood have opened their doors to the public. And this year is no different! On December 13th, the John Marshall House, Valentine Richmond History Center, Monumental Church, St. John's Church, Virginia State Capitol and Museum of the Confederacy will display holiday decorations, recreate traditional holiday events and dances, hold talks by historians and house live musicians.

There is a full day's worth of events planned at each location and a free shuttle traveling between them. There is so relatively little time to see everything that's going on that building a itinerary of must-see events is daunting. I offer a solution:

Spend the day at St. John's Church.

St. Johns Church has organized a diverse day of events that encapsulate the spirit of the celebration under one roof. At 1:00pm, there will be a Reenactment of the Second Virginia Convention of 1775, the integral moment of our nation's history in which Patrick Henry famously declared "Give me Liberty of give me death." At 2:00pm is "An Afternoon with Eliza Poe," a performance by Edgar Allen Poe's birth mother. A noted actress in her lifetime, Poe will tell her tragic life and story and perform brief selections from her acting repertoire. Following Ms. Poe's performance, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, costumed interpreters in the church will be available for questions about the church, Patrick Henry and the Virginia events leading up to the Revolution. To finish the day, at 5:00pm, the Virginia Girls Choice will perform traditional pieces in the church. All events, at St. John's Church and across Court End, are free and open to the public.
