As we near hurricane season, many are still keeping the batteries stocked and the emergency kits ready. But no one is more excited about the weather than Virginia Beach surfers. And with Hurricane Danielle threatening the east coast this past weekend, Virginia Beach saw something unusual: waves!
With an excellent pro and amateur heats since Wednesday and semi-finals performance and attendance on Saturday, Sundays finals for men and junior men was no exception at the 48th Annual East Coast Surfing Championship. With surfers from all over the globe, including some major surfing scenes like Costa Rica, Brazil, Australia, and Hawaii, ECSC really heated up the scene down on the Oceanfront. And after 96 competitors, Aaron Cormican, Andrew Doheny, and Jairo Perez advanced to Sunday's finals.
With the storm bringing in some intense swells, crowds were drawn to some surf AND turf tricks up and down the Beach. Not only were veteran surfers ripping it in the water, but local and international skateboarders, bikers, and motocross superstars were putting on an aerial dynamics at the Coastal Edge sponsored exhibitions.
It was okay if you didn't have your wetsuit or wheels because this ECSC offered other attractions like the Virginia Beach Cornhole Tournament, the Beach Wiffleball Tournament, the U.S. Beach Flag Football Tournament, World Sand Soccer Association Tournament, Skimboard Competition, and Beach Volleyball Tournament.
And there was still time to give back to the community with the ECSC 8K Run and Kid's Fun Run. Many major sponsors were on board to provide demonstrations of all sorts of entertainment to make sure there was family fun for everyone.
So who says there are no waves in Virginia? OK, well, for the most part you do have to be dedicated to hang ten around these waters, but Virginia Beach always has swells of entertainment all year long. And this ECSC provided the icing on the cake, or the white caps, to an excellent Beach summer. Even if the temperatures are going down, surf is still up.
