Mendelssohn at 200 - A 200th Birthday Celebration Honoring Felix Mendelssohn
Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, born, and generally known in English-speaking countries, as Felix Mendelssohn (February 3, 1809 – November 4, 1847) was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Recognized early as a musical prodigy, Mendelssohn's work includes symphonies, concerti, oratorios, piano and chamber music. He is among the most popular composers of the Romantic era.
This remarkable program will take place at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts on October 18, 2009 and will feature pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, a third year student at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, performing Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No.1 in G minor, Op. 25. Also featured are the Aron String Quartet of Vienna, in Elgar's Introduction and Allegro. Other works include Mendelssohn's Overture for Wind Instruments, Finlandia by Sibelius, and Copland's Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo.
