As the child of two teachers, I have often faced the question of what one buys a teacher for Christmas. I'll begin with the most obvious choice: a good book. Books make wonderful presents - they are thoughtful, affordable, interesting, and much longer lasting than almost any other gift, and teachers will, of course, appreciate books in a unique way. Still, one must be careful when buying a teacher a book for two reasons: first, they might already have the book, and second, they might already know more or less everything the book says. To reduce the chances of this gift redundancy, I recommend buying a tangentially related book. In other words, buy a science teacher a cookbook or gardening book that explains the science of the steps it describes, buy an English teacher a book on the history of the printing press, or a history teacher a novel set in the time period they teach.
The other broad category of teacher gift is the practical one. Teachers use up copious amounts of school supplies, and buying a nice, leather-bound notebook or a fine pen gives one the assurance that one's gift will be kept and used for years. Fine coffee or tea often make an excellent gift as well, and almost every teacher appreciates classroom decorations, such as inspirational posters or calendars.
