The London Philharmonic Orchestra - A Celebration of Versatility and Artistic Excellence
Wednesday, 17 February 2010 00:00

Contributed by WR Murphy

My first experience with the London Philharmonic Orchestra came as quite an accident. I was looking for Christmas music on CD, and I stumbled across their recording of Hendel's Messiah. I was completely blown away - the passion and skill with which they performed Hendel's magnum opus was astounding, and listening to it while driving through the snow last weekend was surreally beautiful and powerful.

Sir Thomas Beecham founded the orchestra around 80 years ago, and since then the London Philharmonic has become one of the most renowned and respected orchestras in the world. With the London Philharmonic Orchestra, classical music is alive and exciting. Far from the stuffy wig-wearing, coattail-sporting Mozart you might imagine, the London Philharmonic is a powerful group, filled with vibrant young talent. For example, their prodigious first violin, Peter Schoeman, has been performing in symphony orchestras since he was only ten years old, and also led the orchestra that recorded the music for the The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Later this spring, they will be playing at the Ferguson Center, and that performance is not to be missed.
