The official start of the holiday season in Williamsburg: Grand IlluminationPosted by: Diana Fakhouri on Nov 29, 2009 |

As a William and Mary alumna, I will always remember Grand Illumination as the official start of the holiday season in Williamsburg. This December 6th, candles and fireworks will light up the sky over the Governor's Palace lawn in an annual celebration that harks back to old European traditions.
To get the most out of your Grand Illumination experience, start early! Make your way down to Colonial Williamsburg around 4:45 p.m. to enjoy the Fifes and Drums' performance and other holiday entertainment. At 6:15 p.m. the window candles are lit, setting the entire area aglow. Fireworks are set off from the Governor's Palace, Magazine, and Capitol, but the best viewing spots are on the Palace lawn near the entertainment. Once the fireworks are over, the festivities resume until 7:30 p.m.
'Burg residents take Grand Illumination very seriously, settling in with camping chairs, blankets, and thermoses full of cider and holiday punch. If you'll be in the area this weekend, make a point to attend. It's heartwarming way to welcome the holidays. See you there!
Plan on making reservations and take in a late lunch or dinner in Merchant's Square. Visit nearby Aromas or Seasons Restaurant for lunch beforehand or dinner afterwards. They are both featured in the Insider's Passport to Williamsburg and offer delicious options!

cents and tell us all about it.
