The Sumo San Sake Bomb Tradition
Wednesday, 01 July 2009 00:00

SumoSanLogoIt's no secret to the locals that Richmond's best sushi and saki bar is nestled in the heart of historic Shockoe Bottom. It's hip, it's fun and the sushi is out of this world. Hailed as the best in the region, Sumo San Restaurant won over the Shockoe Bottom crowd with exceptional, original sushi, all of which is created right in Sumo San's kitchen. Equally as popular is Sumo San's Owner and Chef, Victor, whose boisterous laugh can be heard throughout the restaurant when he's around.

Sumo San is home of Richmond's celebrated sake bombs, boasting over 40 different kinds of saki, it's easily one of Richmond's most appreciated traditions in the Bottom. For the uninitiated, Sumo San's sake bombs are quite the ritual: sumo_partyVictor, the Chef and Owner, sets up beer glasses, chopsticks, and sake cups on a bar table. The beer glasses are then filled half way with beer, two chopsticks are placed on top of each glass, then cups of hot sake are placed precariously on top of that. Next Victor yells, "Sake!" And the crowd replies, "Bomb!" Again Victor yells, "Sake!" And the crowd returns, "Bomb!" Then Victor slams his head onto the table, which makes the sake glasses drop into the beer. Everyone then grabs a glass and chugs the now mixed sake bomb.

It's an absolute blast - Great food, good company and the best SUSHI and SAKE.  Be sure to ask for Victor and tell him Insider's Passport sent you.
