The US Army Medical Command Band is the primary musical representative of America's premier medical team, the Army Medical Department. The United States Army Medical Command Band's mission is to provide music to promote, sustain and enhance Soldier health in direct support of the United States Army Medical Command (MEDCOM). The MEDCOM Band is linked by name and mission to the Army Medical community. The face and challenges within Army medicine are changing, and the MEDCOM Band is an active participant in meeting the challenges of the Army's contemporary operating environment. The Unit's most recent MEDCOM support endeavor has been to focus on Warrior Transition Units (WTU). The goal of the band's WTU musical support is reassure our Warriors in Transition and their family members that they are important, receiving the best possible care, and will return to health soon.
The US Army Medical Command Band has a unique history. This band is designed to be a command level support asset and consists of 62 personnel. It was activated in 1942 at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, and was known as the Medical Field Service School Band until 1944, when it was re-designated the 323rd Army Service Forces Band. Two years later, the band, along with the Army Medical Schools, moved to Texas, establishing Ft. Sam Houston as the "Home of Army Medicine". In 1975, the band was re-designated as the 5th Army Band. On 22 July 2004, the band was granted the distinctive designation of being the US Army Medical Command Band. In addition to military commitments at Ft. Sam Houston, the MEDCOM Band is highly regarded by the local community and performs frequently in the San Antonio area and is involved in educational outreach events across high schools and universities throughout Texas.
