On May 30, 2009 come down to 24th Street Park and check out the First East Coast She Crab Soup Classic. If you like She Crab Soup or even if you don't this is a unique event you won't want to miss.

The First East Coast She Crab Soup Classic is an open competition among restaurants. This event focuses on seafood, which is the most identifiable cuisine in Virginia Beach and a staple of area menus for decades. Based on tastings, there will be two categories for best recipe winners, with three places in each. One category will be decided by a panel of Hampton Roads food critics and the other - "The Peoples Choice" - by the general public. The event will be open to 16 competitors.

Competing restaurants:

1. Captain George's Seafood
2. Charlie's Seafood
3. Farm Fresh
4. Freemason Abbey
5. GF Keagan's
6. Lucky Oyster Seafood Grill
7. Lynnhaven Fish House
8. Mahi Mah's Seafood
9. Margie & Ray's Crabhouse
10. McCormick & Schmick's Seafood
11. Passion The Restaurant
12. Sea Crest Restaurant
13. Tautogs
14. Tanner's Creek Seafood
15. Tradewinds
16. Waterman's Surfside Grill

The public will be charged a nominal fee to enter the event. Each paying guest receives a sheet that is stamped at each restaurant's station. This allows each person to sample each offering.

Judges will anonymously evaluate all soups and select First, Second, and Third Place winners. Their collective decision is final and based solely on specific criteria. Winners will be announced at the end of the event. Each patron who goes through the tasting will receive one ballot, on which votes for First, Second, and Third Place will be entered. The ballots will be independently tallied to determine winners. Plaques for all winners will be awarded so they will be displayed in restaurants, where chefs will enjoy "bragging rights" for a full year.

My money is on Tautogs or Lynnhaven Fish House!
