Top Ten Back to School Tips to Start Your Year Off Right
Monday, 09 August 2010 13:06

Contributed by Quinn Simmons

10. Before you get into the back to school “mode”, make sure you have one last summer hurrah! Head over to King’s Dominion or Maymont for an afternoon of fun.

9. Get organized! Get your school supplies packed up and ready to go along with your planner. Mark your class schedule in it and any other important dates. If you do it ahead of time you’ll be sure not to forget.

8. Use some of that hard-earned summer cash (or ask your parents) and head to the mall to get some fresh school clothes (AND SHOES!)! It’s a proven fact that if you wake up in the morning and take some time to look your best, your academic performance will also be increased, as opposed to waking up, rolling out of bed, and wearing your p.j.’s to class. So grab some basics that you’ll be able to wear for years to come and look good doing it.

7. Develop a budget. Be familiar with how much money you have in your account, and if you are employed, how much you are making. You can whip up a sheet pretty easily on excel, just think of how you spend your money on a monthly basis. Don’t forget to include things like: rent. gas, gifts for friends/family members, and fun, of course! After you make your budget, stick to it. It’ll make your life easier in the long run.

back-to-school-3_t-1024x7686. Start shifting your routine. While this isn’t the most fun, it’ll really help you out on those early school mornings. Start a week before school starts and every night go to bed 15 minutes earlier. You also need to wake up 15 minutes earlier so that when your first day comes around, it won’t be such a hard transition. Starting off on the right foot would not be falling asleep on your first day.

5. Set some goals for the upcoming year. We all know by the end of a school year it’s easy to fall into a routine of staying up late, hanging out with friends, and waiting to do your homework until you have either a study hall or right before class starts. Make a goal for yourself that you will finish your homework by 8 PM the night before it’s due and try your best to stick to that goal. It’ll save you stress and start your year off right.

4. If you’re riding the bus, be aware of what time it leaves (and what number it is!). I remember all too well my first experience with a bus in the 6th grade. No one told me that I switched busses at our local high school, so I had no idea what number to take. It was a long walk home that first day of school.

3. Eat right! I know you may be nervous, but make sure you’re eating. Breakfast before school is a must. According to research reported by the U.K.'s Telegraph newspaper, "feeding children high energy breakfast foods such as porridge at a young age boosts their exams results at school." Children who followed such a diet before their third birthday had improved scores in reading and problem-solving tests compared to their peers (http://mrbreakfast.com).

2. Set your alarm (or maybe even two!) the night before school starts. Make sure that ol’ alarm clock is working and don’t forget to switch the “on” button.

1. Have a positive attitude! Even if you don’t want to be there, go to school with a positive outlook on your year, smile at your teachers, say hello to new people, and just think of how great a year you will have.
