The toast begins:
"A New Year's toast to love and laughter And happily ever after ..."
The completed toast deemed best by a judging panel for ringing in 2011 will earn its author a Virginia Opera prize package. Those entering are asked to write two to four additional sentences and submit the finished toast by e-mail to

or through Virginia Opera's Facebook page: www.facebook.com/VaOpera. The winning toast will be announced the last week of December and its composer will receive tickets to Virginia Opera's Saturday opening night in Norfolk's Harrison Opera House, a backstage tour, and a photographed champagne toast with opera singers backstage. The winner and their guest can choose to attend the epic production of Wagner's The Valkyrie Saturday, February 5, 2011 or Puccini's tragic love story Madama Butterfly Saturday, March 19, 2011.
"Having exactly the right toast to propose is part of the magic of New Year's Eve and we'd like to encourage the creativity of the whole community in composing a welcome for 2011," said Gus Stuhlreyer, General Director and C.E.O. of Virginia Opera. He noted that a New Year's toast and opera have more in common than it might seem "since opera is an art form that deals with basic human emotions and events that everyone can relate to and celebrate."
The judging panel for the competition includes:
•Yeidy Cordero, Liberty Tax franchise owner and vice president, Hampton Roads Hispanic Chamber of Commerce •Steve Snyder, senior vice president, Checkered Flag Motor Car Company, Virginia Beach •Felicia Blow, director of public affairs, Cox Communications, Chesapeake •Dana Schrad, executive director, Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, Richmond •Drew Tavss, president & CEO, Mid South Building Supply, Springfield
