Virginia Opera is collaborating with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia (FSEVA) to fight hunger in Hampton Roads
Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:00

va-opera-logo2Virginia Opera is collaborating with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia (FSEVA) to fight hunger in Hampton Roads by hosting a Food Drive during the production of Wagner's THE VALKYRIE. The Food Drive begins Monday, Jan. 24, 2011 and runs through Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2011.

"Donations to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia are typically very strong during the holiday season, but taper off as the new year begins. One in four people in our community depend on the Foodbank year round, so the Virginia Opera couldn't be collecting food at a better time!" said Abby Weber, Food and Fund Drive Coordinator for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia.

Virginia Opera staff, inspired by the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia's need, stepped up to make the first donations of non-perishable food. "It is my goal to remind the community that we have hungry neighbors throughout the year, not just during the holiday season. The winter months are such an important time to offer our help to those in need," said Lisa Sands. Ms. Sands, Hampton Roads Director of Development at Virginia Opera, formerly served as the Director of Development of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and has served as a volunteer for many years.

Virginia Opera encourages community members and opera patrons to donate non-perishable food items at the Virginia Opera box office located at Norfolk's Harrison Opera House, Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Patrons are welcome to bring non-perishable food items with them to performances of Wagner's THE VALKYRIE. With each donation of a non-perishable food item, individuals, who do not already have tickets to Virginia Opera's production of Wagner's THE VALKYRIE, will be eligible to receive a 25% discount off one ticket to see Wagner's THE VALKYRIE at Norfolk's Harrison Opera House (excludes section 1A and 1B, cannot be combined with other offers).

foodbank-virginia-logoThe Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia promotes food recovery; acquires and distributes food, clothing and related products; and provides community leadership and education on issues of hunger and poverty. The ten most needed items include: peanut butter, chunky soups, canned meats, canned tuna, canned vegetables, juice, cereal, macaroni and cheese, pasta, and pasta sauces.

Virginia Opera is in its 36th year of operation, and is known and respected nationwide for the identification and presentation of the finest young artists, for the musical and dramatic integrity of its productions, and for the ingenuity and variety of its education and outreach programs. The company produces 32 mainstage performances in three markets reaching nearly 50,000 attendees each season.

The Harrison Opera House is located at 160 E. Virginia Beach Blvd. in Norfolk, Virginia. For more information about the collaboration, call 1-866-Opera-Va (1-866-673-7282). Norfolk and statewide ticket sales and information are available on Virginia Opera's website at www.VaOpera.org, and via phone at 1.866.Opera.Va (1-866-673-7282).
