Well worth a visit - St. John's Church in Richmond
Sunday, 18 October 2009 07:11

Contributed by WR Murphy

st.johnschurch_richmondSt. John's Church is a major landmark in Richmond, Virginia. It's still an active Episcopal church, and Edgar Allan Poe's mother is buried there, and more famously it is where Patrick Henry delivered his "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death," speech, on March 23rd, 1775. The Founding Fathers had met in the church, since it was one of the few buildings large enough to hold their assembly that was outside the immediate oversight of the Colonial Governor in Williamsburg.

The church, which is the oldest in Richmond, was built in 1741, when William Byrd II donated the land and building materials. St. John's offers guided tours for a small fee, seven days a week, though on Sundays the tours cannot commence until early afternoon, after the church services have ended. And, although they are over for this year, during the summer months reenactments of Patrick Henry's speech are held every Sunday afternoon. This church is a well-preserved and well-presented part of our nation's history, and if you find yourself in Richmond, it's well worth a visit.
