Whatever your traditions, have a Happy Easter!
Tuesday, 30 March 2010 00:00

Contributed by Diana Fakhouri

Bunny-Surprise-LEaster is this Sunday, April 4, and I can't wait to bite off some chocolate bunny ears! After finding the baskets left by the Easter bunny, many revelers will head to church. Not everyone, though - like Christmas, Easter is a holiday associated with traditions celebrated by the religious and secular.

Of course, the most recognizable Easter symbol is the Easter Bunny. The legend of the rabbit comes from the Alsace region of France and later spread throughout Europe. Originally, the Easter Bunny was said to bring eggs on Easter morning, but as early as the 1800's egg and rabbit shaped candy was also exchanged.

Eggs represent renewal and have been used to celebrate Easter for centuries around the world. Dyeing Easter eggs is great activity for kids and adults that I always loved. Try visiting a craft store for paint, gemstones, or glitter to give your eggs even more pizzazz!

The tradition of the Easter Bunny leaving baskets for children stems from the old French legend of the egg-bearing rabbit. Trying to be more health-conscious in 2010 with your baskets? Lay off the candy and fill your friends' and families' Easter baskets with small spring-inspired trinkets like yard toys, sunglasses, or gardening tools. Of course, chocolate, jelly beans, and marshmallow Peeps are popular options that are always a hit.

Whatever traditions you incorporate into your celebration, have a very Happy Easter!
