Will you be my Muddy Buddy?!
Wednesday, 18 February 2009 00:00

Last year I was a spectator, so there was absolutely no mud involved in my experience, but even as I sat on the sidelines drinking my Coke Zero, I had to acknowledge that The Muddy Buddy Ride and Run is indeed one helluva event.  I know it sounds crazy - participants sign up with a buddy and take turns trail running, mountain biking and tackling obstacles throughout the course, with the grand finale being crawling through a mud pit to get to the finish. The event is great for beginner athletes and experienced racers alike, but to be honest it didn't look like a blast for the participants that were completely out of shape and didn't doany sort of training.

Sometimes the event changes from location to location, but typically each race features a 6-7 mile course and 5 obstacles. At the start of the race, one team member will run and one will ride the bike.  At the 1st obstacle, the rider will drop the bike, complete the obstacle, and begin running. The runner will arrive, complete the obstacle, find their bike, and begin riding. Teams will continue leapfrogging each other through the entire course. At the end of the race, racers will crawl through the infamous Mud Pit crossing the finish line together.  Too awesome for words!!!

I'm actually graduating from my spectator status and buddying up with my sister-in-law this year.  The race is in May, so we plan on starting our training next month.  Gotta beat our husbands ' time by any means possible or we'll never live it down.

One last word of advice...prepare to get down and dirty.
